The Dolphin Terrace Residence in Corona del Mar embodies the discipline of genuine minimalism — the belief that a perfectly detailed, unornamented surface is more beautiful than any decoration applied to it. H & J Cabinets was engaged to produce contemporary cabinetry throughout the home that upheld this principle without exception.
Every surface in this project was designed to be seamless. Upper and lower cabinets align in continuous planes. Hardware was eliminated wherever possible in favor of touch-latch and push-to-open mechanisms. Panel reveals, where they occur, are precisely dimensioned and consistently maintained throughout the installation. The difficulty of achieving this level of visual simplicity is significant — it requires far more precise construction than a design with more visual complexity.
H & J's framed construction platform provides dimensional stability critical to maintaining the tight geometry this design demands over time. Material selection favored consistent, linear-grained species that would not introduce visual noise into the composition — the cabinetry should read as a surface, not as wood.
