The Style

What are
modern cabinets?

Modern cabinets are defined by clean, uninterrupted surfaces, flat-panel or slab door fronts, and a deliberate absence of ornamental detail. They trade decorative profiles for precision: tight tolerances, flush planes, integrated or recessed hardware, and a visual restraint that allows material quality to become the design statement.

A modern cabinet done well is not a simple cabinet. It is an exacting one. With no moulding or carved detail to distract the eye, every joint, every edge, every surface transition must be exactly right. The design exposes the craft rather than concealing it.

Why Modern Works

What makes modern cabinets
exceptional?

The restraint of the modern aesthetic is its greatest functional strength. Without decorative profiles or surface hardware, storage efficiency is maximized and daily use becomes frictionless. Full-overlay configurations, soft-close mechanisms, and integrated pull solutions produce a seamless surface that remains clean in the busiest spaces.

Materially, modern cabinetry puts premium hardwoods and veneers on full display. A book-matched white oak panel or a painted finish held to a perfect sheen becomes the entire visual statement. There is no room for compromise.

The H & J Standard

H & J's approach to
modern construction

Our modern cabinets are built on the same framed construction that defines all H & J work. The face frame is structural — it keeps the cabinet square as the home settles, ensures doors stay aligned over decades, and provides a foundation that frameless systems cannot match. The modern aesthetic never requires sacrificing durability.

Every cabinet is drawn specifically for the space, cut and assembled in our Santa Ana shop, and installed by our own team. We attend design meetings, advise on what is buildable and what will hold long-term, and make ourselves available for any adjustment the space requires after move-in.

"A modern cabinet is not an easy cabinet. When there is nothing to hide behind, the work has to be right."
