What are custom
TV cabinets and media units?
Custom TV cabinets and media units are built-in storage and display solutions designed around a specific television, component system, and room configuration. Unlike off-the-shelf media furniture, custom units are drawn to the exact dimensions of the wall, the screen size, and the depth of the electronics — producing an installation that reads as part of the room's architecture rather than a piece of furniture placed in front of it.
A well-designed media unit conceals what does not need to be seen — cables, components, cooling systems, gaming equipment — and presents what does: the screen, the shelving, and the overall composition of the wall.
What makes a great
TV cabinet?
A great TV cabinet solves several problems simultaneously: it positions the screen at the correct viewing height, provides ventilated storage for AV components, conceals all wiring, and integrates with the surrounding built-ins or architectural elements so that the wall reads as a unified composition.
Component access, cable routing, and heat management are technical considerations that must be designed in from the beginning — not added as afterthoughts. At H & J, we work through these requirements in the drawing stage so the finished installation performs as well as it looks.
- Precision-sized TV nicheThe screen opening is sized to the specific television — not a standard opening — so the installation looks intentional.
- Ventilated component storageEquipment bays with removable backs, routed cable paths, and passive ventilation for amplifiers and receivers.
- Integrated cable managementIn-wall conduit routing and cabinet-level wire management that eliminates visible cabling throughout.
- Coordinated flanking storageSurrounding cabinetry, shelving, and drawers designed as part of the same composition, not added separately.
Media units built
as part of the room
At H & J, custom TV cabinets and media units are treated as architectural elements — not furniture. They are drawn to the wall, built in our shop, and installed by our own team as a complete system. The result looks like the room was designed around the cabinetry, because it was.
We have built media walls for some of the finest residences in Orange County — rooms where the television is one element in a larger composition of shelving, display cabinetry, bar units, and architectural millwork. We understand how all of those elements work together, and we build them that way.
"A media wall done right disappears into the architecture — until you turn the screen on."
