Intricate Craft at the Edge of the Pacific
Pelican Point is one of Newport Beach's most exclusive gated communities — a clifftop enclave where the Pacific Ocean defines the horizon from nearly every room. The residence H & J Cabinets worked on there was designed in a Moroccan-inspired idiom, with intricate ceiling detailing and a level of ornamental craft rarely attempted in residential cabinetry.
The design called for walnut as the primary material — a wood whose deep, chocolatey grain and rich natural lustre suited the home's warm, layered aesthetic. H & J produced custom carved details, decorative moulding systems, and hand-finished surfaces that respond to the architecture's extraordinary ceiling work rather than competing with it.
Projects at this level of complexity require a production team with both the technical skill to execute complex geometry and the artistic sensibility to understand how each detail relates to the whole. H & J's in-house shop — staffed entirely by our own craftspeople, never subcontractors — produces every element from raw material to finished surface, maintaining quality control throughout the process.
Walnut selection for this project was handled with the same care as the design decisions: boards chosen for consistent figure, grain direction managed within panels, and finish chemistry selected to enhance the wood's natural beauty without altering its character. For clients with similarly ambitious visions in Newport Beach, we welcome the challenge.
