Modern Restraint, Meticulously Executed
The Serra Drive Residence — known to the design community as the Morning Canyon project — is a study in the power of simplicity executed without compromise. Designed by architect Eric Olsen with interiors by Melinda Murtaugh and built by RDM Homes, this Corona del Mar home captures the beauty of modern design in its most disciplined form.
H & J Cabinets was engaged to produce every millwork element throughout the house — kitchen cabinetry, bathroom vanities, built-in storage systems, and custom panel work integrated into the architecture. The design called for contemporary cabinetry with clean, unbroken lines: no visible hardware, flush surfaces, and material transitions so precise they read as monolithic.
Achieving that seamlessness requires more than design skill — it requires construction discipline. H & J's framed construction platform was used throughout, providing structural integrity that keeps the geometry tight over time. Material selection centered on naturally finished hardwoods that bring warmth to the home's otherwise cool palette, preventing the space from feeling austere despite its restraint.
The Serra Drive Residence demonstrates what becomes possible when a skilled architect, a thoughtful interior designer, and a custom cabinet maker are working in genuine alignment from the earliest stages of design. Projects of this caliber are available across Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, and throughout Orange County.
